Visual Performing Arts Colleges

Crystal Said:

Does AP Art History count as a CP elective AND Visual/Performing arts?

We Answered:

According to the UCs:

Beginning with 2006 graduates, students must satisfy the "f" requirement by completing a single yearlong course from a single VPA discipline. Though students may take the course over different academic years, it must be taken in sequential order.

This means you must take Ceramics 1 first and Ceramics 2 next. If you completed Ceramics 1 already, you must complete Ceramics 2 now to fulfill the requirement. Otherwise you have to take another whole year of VPA to satisfy the requirement.

College-Preparatory Electives refer to any a-f courses you took in addition to the requirement. So if you took a third year of Spanish (2 years required), that can be counted as CPE. There are other types of courses that can count as CPE, such as Career Technical Education courses. For a detailed explanation, see http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/ed… (scroll down to "g | College-Preparatory Electives").

What counts as Visual performing Arts credits?

We Answered:

Looking at the UC website:

f. Visual and Performing Arts (VPA) – 1 year required
A single yearlong approved arts course from a single VPA discipline: dance, drama/theater, music or visual art.

It looks like to complete the F requirement you need 1 year, so just a guess but it seems like you may need to take Photo 2 to be one year of a single discipline.

Go to this website, and put in your school name and it should have all the courses at your school and if they count and what they count for.

It think this must be why at my son's private school they emphasize that you will be in your VPA for one full year in 9th, so choose something you'll enjoy for that whole time. They also go by semester, but most classes are a full year.

Good luck!
